FRESHMAN BAND
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
The Freshman Band is comprised of only ninth grade students. The focus in this ensemble is individual growth. With only one grade in this band, students have more individualized parts and responsibility to perform those parts correctly. This ensemble is where students mentally prepare to become leaders in the Concert Band. The Freshman band performs at all of the same functions as the Senior High Band and are considered part of Senior High. Students in this ensemble are expected to perform at the Pep Band Games with the rest of the Senior High Band as well as Coronations, Veterans’ Day, Memorial Day, Graduation and Marching Band. Students in this ensemble begin to see band as part of their civic duty as musicians.

- Students will have mastered proper playing posture.
- Students will understand the importance of a properly developed embouchure and how it relates to good tone production and good intonation.
- Students will be able to independently read and explain all basic rhythms and some complex rhythms.
- Students will continue to develop their listening skills through individual and group intonation exercises.
- Students will be able to describe and define all basic musical terms. Students will start to expand their knowledge of musical terms as they appear in a variety of forms and languages.
- Students will both play and analyze a variety of different styles of music within their musical abilities.
- To have FUN doing all of the above and more.
