PEP BAND / MARCHING BAND
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
PEP BAND
Pep Band is mandatory for students in grades 9-12. Eighth grade students are encouraged to participate in Pep Band as often as they can but are not required. Pep Band participates at several functions throughout the year including sporting events, coronations, and pep-fest’s. Known for their dancing, singing, laughing, and ability to rally the crowd, they are a blast to listen to and watch. A schedule of pep band games can be found under the chapter titled “Schedules.” Students are expected to note the dates on their calendars immediately and make every effort to avoid conflicts. Attendance at these events is a fundamental and integral part of your membership in the Mesabi East Band Program. Pep band is required to letter in band. Schedule for Pep Band at games is subject to change through-out the year.
MARCHING BAND
Participation in this ensemble is expected from all band students entering grades 8-12. This group starts the beginning of June and is completed after the 3rd week of July. Rehearsals are in the evenings. The Marching Band participates in several different area parades and is a very good representative for the school during the marching season. The students become more familiar with their instruments and work on a variety of musical styles not found in a traditional concert band setting. Above all, the students earn a sense of pride that comes with doing their part in the band’s civic responsibilities.
Marching band is the only band that is currently considered co-curricular. That means it is an extension of the band program and school year. Participation is rewarded in the form of extra credit for fall quarter. A student can earn up to 20% extra credit. Marching band is also a requirement for lettering. Students also earn money for their trip by participating in the Marching Band.
