JAZZ BAND
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
JAZZ BAND IS FOR THE COMMITTED INDIVIDUAL ONLY. To maintain a quality level of performance, every member of the Jazz Band must be on time and in attendance at every rehearsal.
The Jazz Band meets every Monday and Thursday at 7am in the morning. Two goals of the Jazz Band are: 1) to provide students with an opportunity to study, learn, and play jazz and 2) to produce a quality musical performance. Since a jazz band typically requires a limited amount of players, Mr. Peterson will work hard to find a healthy balance in size and instrumentation while still maintaining a quality sound. The jazz band will also be open to singers as many great jazz tunes are actually vocal tunes. The Jazz Band is open to students in grades 9-12.
This group is successful because of the self-motivation of the students. Students learn new styles of music as well as improvisational skills. The students in this ensemble are committed, not only to their parts, but to each other. This group has a strict attendance policy. Failure to attend is grounds for removal from the ensemble. The Jazz Band has potential to play for a variety of events both in and outside of the school. This ensemble also has the ability to travel to a variety of contests and festivals as well. Most of the travel though does depend on a fair amount of fundraising that is done by the students.
REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN JAZZ BAND
*Each student who desires to perform in the Jazz Band is required to perform an entrance audition with Mr. Peterson. Materials for the audition will be handed out at the beginning of each school year.
*EVERY STUDENT must make a commitment to be on time for every rehearsal.
