JOSH PETERSON - DIRECTOR OF BANDS
Mr. Peterson has been the Director of Bands at Mesabi East Public Schools since 2013. As a music educator, music advocator, and professional musician in the Army, Mr. Peterson can not imagine a life with out music.
Mr. Peterson grew up in Detroit Lakes, MN and earned his Bachelor of Music Segree from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND where he graduated with the highest award from the music department; the Presser Award.
As if a career in music education wasn’t enough, Mr. Peterson is also a professional musician and member of the 188th North Dakota Army National Guard Band. As a member of the band, he performs in a variety of ensembles which include a concert band, a jazz band, a jazz combo, and a country rock band called Flashbang.
Studying piano at an early age, his love and passion for music provided him with an abundance of musical experiences and opportunities. Some of which include rock bands, worship teams, concert bands, marching bands, jazz bands, pit orchestras, musicals, rock camps, and even sound production.
Even though piano started it all, (which he believes is the basis for all music and should be studied by all), it certainly didn’t stop there. Piano eventually led to the saxophone which led to the clarinet. Guitar came next and eventually led to bass guitar. Then the flute. Not sure how that happened, he is still trying to figure that one out. He must have heard it in a love song or something like that. Although he primarily performs on the guitar, bass, saxophone, and clarinet, he is well versed in most instruments. After-all he is a band director.
Mr. Peterson can not take all the credit for his achievements since music runs deep in the family. Having a grandfather, Gordy Peterson (a well known band director in Elbow Lake, MN) and a father and four uncles who all received degrees in music (two of which became band directors), it is easy to see how he could get so wrapped up in the music scene.
“Rock on Mesabi East, I’ll see you on stage,” Mr. P.
